PI Insurance is not a legal requirement for most professions. However, many clients, contracts—especially public-sector or corporate ones—and professional bodies will require you to hold it before they'll work with you. It also provides vital financial protection if a client makes a claim against you.

It covers legal defence costs and compensation if a client claims your professional advice or services caused them a financial loss. This includes negligence, breach of duty, unintentional defamation, unintentional confidentiality breaches, loss of documents and unintentional intellectual property infringement (excluding patents).

Financial advice, investment advice or any activity regulated under FSMA 2000 is excluded. Claims brought in the US or Canada, cyber acts and IT failures, pollution, and fines or penalties are also excluded. That depends on your work. Some client contracts or professional body memberships (such as ICAEW) require higher limits. Limits range from £100,000 to £5m on this policy.

Professional Indemnity operates on a claims-made basis. This means the policy in force when the claim is first notified to us responds — not the policy in force when the original work was done. A retroactive date can be selected to cover earlier work, provided you have had continuous cover.
